New Updates on Personal Data Protection Act
Even the cyber world faces serious threats. Users now are becoming restless now because they do not know when hackers will strike and get what they treasure most in the world – information. With that, Singapore is intensifying its Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). This act will make your personal data more secured and protected.
Let it be known that come July 2, 2014, companies need to conform to new rules. There are changes when it comes with the collection and usage of personal data. Here are some of the new rules implemented by the government of Singapore:
- Companies need to tell the reason: After July 2, companies who collect information are required to inform their costumers why they are collecting such data. The companies will also need the costumers consent. If in the event that the customer changes his mind (of giving consent), the customer can retract anytime.
- Companies need to lock documents: Companies should have the facilities to lock the documents and the data that goes with it. This can be done by creating passwords so unauthorized access will be prevented.
- When can companies transfer data: When the company decides to transfer data outside Singapore, they should have the proper facility to protect the data. Data that is being transferred may leak. If firms do not follow this, they will face penalties. They can pay a fine of S$ 1 million if proven guilty.
Those are some of the new updates. If you think that the companies collecting your information are abusing its power, you can always voice out your concern. Your life is stored in digital form, it should be protected like how you protect your home.
