Attracting Foreign Investors to Singapore Markets

The Dutch economist, Winsemius came into the scene when Singapore was being pinned down by the heavy burden of a growing population and also a growing unemployment. In order to attract in foreign investors and improve the image of the country, he proposed a large-scale public housing programme. Over the years, big oil companies like Shell and Esso established their refineries in the country. Singapore also upgraded its industrial capacity and as a result Dutch electronics company, Phillips set up production plants in the country.

Singapore lives up to its name of the easiest place to do business by concentrating its manufacturing prowess on industries like financial services, biotechnology, and oil refining. Over the years however Singapore has established itself as a major tourist hub and in a bid to maintain that position, has taken up projects to improve the cityscape so as to attract more tourists. The Marina Bay Sands which is an integrated resort and has a casino has been developed by the Las Vegas Sands and is their pet project in the hope to attract in more tourists since the government of Singapore has now legalized gambling. The major reason why investors are attracted to Singapore is the fact that the government does not levy any taxes on their capital gains and the people are not charged with taxes if they receive any foreign income, which is what puts it ahead in the race with India and China.
