8 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Despite the advances made in healthcare and medicine, pregnant women still face a lot of risks. The most common pregnancy complications in Singapore include gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. The three are also the most common worldwide because of general poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.

Here are ways you can avoid complications during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and nutrition, vitamins

Take supplements. Essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, and folic acid are important in the formation of baby’s brain and spinal cord. You can get most prenatal vitamins over the counter but you need to consult your doctor if it is still necessary for you to take vitamins specifically for pregnancy if you have other existing conditions.

Check other medications. If you need to take medications for existing conditions, you need to let your doctor know. Some medications including over the counter drugs should be avoided during pregnancy, so be careful when taking anything even just for a cold or a headache.

Stay active. If you are already exercising regularly before the pregnancy, you should not stop. Just vary the routine to make it suitable for your condition. However, if you have not been active before you got pregnant, it is still not too late to get some exercise to control your weight and reduce stress and body pain. Walking for 20 minutes daily is the easiest and cheapest pregnancy workout.

Avoid smoking and alcohol. Now is not the time to indulge yourself in these if you are expecting. Smoking in particular has been linked to birth complications and preterm birth.

Avoid harsh chemicals. Inhaling solvents or exposure to harsh chemicals in general can be harmful for you. You might need to wear gloves and a face mask if you are cleaning the house, handling pet droppings or if you need to use chemicals for example.

Monitor your weight. Low weight can lead to problems for your baby but excessive weight gain is just as bad. If you have problems with your weight even before pregnancy, you need to ask your doctor for a guide to your ideal weight to avoid complications. You will need to change your diet and exercise.

Change some habits. Some women who feel stressed or experience body pain during pregnancy might want to try relaxing at the spa, but you should be careful when using methods and alternative treatments. You should, for the time being, avoid saunas, essential oils, herbal remedies, herbal teas, and alternative supplements. Before getting a massage or any other treatment, you should ask your doctor if it is safe.

Cut back on caffeine. You need to limit your caffeine intake when your pregnant to avoid issues with your baby. To combat the urge, you can substitute caffeine with fresh fruits and water.
